Is Cake Wrecked?

Is it just me, or have you noticed that ever since Cake Wrecks got uber famous, it hasn't been as good. Is Jen so busy on her book tour that she's no longer at the helm and has delegated all her goofy cake copywriting to assistants? Has she exhausted her top-shelf material? And is there any such thing as a genuine cake wreck anymore, or are they all slowly becoming cheap imitations, wannabes and impostors?

I noticed right around the time Cake Wrecks switched blog formats and started advertising like Donny Deutsch on Super Bowl Sunday, something had changed. Where was the charm? Did the unlikely success of a brilliant nerdy blogstress finding humor in professional cakes that have "gone horribly hilariously wrong" explode and then burn out like a super nova? Or is Cake Wrecks as good as ever and I'm just bored?

Don't get me wrong... I love Jen and am very happy for her celebrity and success. Far less superior subject matter has made mega-millionaires out of their entrepreneurs. And for Jen's sake, I hope she is able to parlay her quirky funny light-hearted blog and book deal into a fortune so grand it will keep her great-great-grandchildren in Bentleys. Who isn't for the small-town kid doing good and rising to unimaginable heights?

But unfortunately, I think Cake Wrecks has passed its prime.

What was once a side-splitting novelty that kept me coming back for more and more and more, is now a kind of afterthought I indulge in once or twice a week. Still okay, but kind of overexposed. Kind of Racheal Ray-ish. Kind of old and tired like those dusty cracked display cakes in the condemned bakery windows she likes to feature.

What do ya'll think? Is it just me and Cake Wrecks is it's still the cat's meow? Or am I right and it's slowly being replaced by the People of Wal-Mart?

I hear people talking about the show, but have never watched it. I do enjoy me some Ace of Cakes.

You know what's really bad, though? Cake Boss. HORRIBLE! It's like Ace of Cakes in Jersey. God Awful. Promise me you'll never watch...

Catherinette! Click the link. Cake Wrecks is a blog about cakes gone wrong.

Hello, by the way! I was just adding you to my blogroll!

This is how dorky, unaware and unable to run with the "cool people" I am. I've NEVER heard of Cake Wrecks. And who's Jen? I KNOW and LOVE Alix! She's a rockstar to me! :-)

Forgetting about cake wrecks just like you are forgetting about me! What happened to our wedding? hehe!

Funny, I just deleted cake wrecks from my blog roll. I got tired of seeing supermarket bakery cakes. The only ones I've enjoyed in the past 6 months has seen the Sunday ones, which are always fabulous!

yeah, once she started marketing tee shirts and aprons, her stuff got boring.

I LOVE people of Walmart. You have to check out mydrunktexts.com! It's hilarious!

Otin, I've decided since your "Dear Me" post and the fabulous PS's, that the wedding is back on. As long as you can amuse yourself, we'll get along fine.

{wink}

I guess great minds do think alike. I also recently took cake wrecks off my favorites because it has become boring. Jen's 15 minutes of fame has passed.

I totally agree, Al. I find myself checking Cake Wrecks more and more infrequently. I no longer laugh out loud. Too bad fame does that to people. Soneone should tell Jen.

Meanwhile, People of Walmart is still hilarious. It's good to have an outlet when in need of a good laugh.

Happy Veteran's Day, everyone! Be sure to hug a vet. If you don't have one of your own, mine will certainly oblige.

Well, I haven't heard of Cake Wrecks so I never missed out. I once complained in a blog that I couldn't stand Rachel Ray and pissed off a good deal of people, so lucky I didn't say that she annoys me here. ;-]

I just think that maybe there are only so many ways that a cake can be wrecked and after that it all gets kind of repetitive. I still enjoy Jen's blog though. And I am extremely happy for her because of her book deal. If only we all could be so lucky, huh?

I'll need a couple pieces of that cake to nosh on while I ponder your question :-)

I couldn't agree more. I think it's becoming questionable what's an honest wreck and what's a "hey, let's get on cake wrecks".

Oh, and I love me some Wal-mart people! :)

Dear SFTC,

OF COURSE we can play nice! And I look forward to it. Thank you for visiting Casa Hice and leaving a comment!

Two things though:

1) Cake Wrecks is a blog. Click on my link or go to http://cakewrecks.com and check it out.

2) No hard feelings about the National Championship in January 2007, right?

Welcome aboard!

Snickering over the "under neat" on the cake...fancy getting paid to blog, do you blame her? But anyway sweetie, you are too funny...

I never visited Cake Wrecks. Guess that was a good thing!?

Well now, Lovely Alix that's a shame.
But, if you start having withdrawals regarding cake wrecks, or any accidental hilarity that begins with innocently mixing ingredients and believing the thing will look just like it does in the picture....but ends up with some offspring of sorts, some mutant thing that's possibly edible but not entirely....appetizing, I will graciously inundate you with a plethora of some of my less successful baking attempts. Oh me oh my. (But I'm good with soups.)
XOXOXOXOXOX

@Alix: But we'll always have "gypped". ;-)

Jeanie said...

I have only seen Cake Wrecks a couple of times....so that doesn't qualify me to have an opinion. I'm not too fond of blogs that have lots of ads or get too commercial looking.

Alix said...

That's right everyone. A Cake Wrecks scandal brought Garret and me together - and the world has never been the same since.

Love you, man.

Garret of Jim and Garret said...

Love you too! ::Smooches!::

Joanne said...

Coming to the party late -- wondering what "gypped" means and hoping Alix and Garret come clean - going to sit back and wait until then.

I guess I need to go back and check earlier Cake Wrecks - I still giggle so maybe I don't know what I am missing. Ignorance is bliss and sometimes I am the happiest person on the planet - *dum dee dumm dee dum*

Hello hello!!! SO happy you came by, any friend of Mr. Greens is a friend of mine! Totally following and hoping to get to know you better!

So funny, my sister and I were just talking about cake wrecks last night because I didn't know what the heck it was and she told me to crawl out from under my rock...haha!

For the story on my Cake Wrecks scandal and how Garret and I met {for you dear Joanne} follow this URL to my post last December: "Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves." It explains everything...

I've never heard of Cake Wrecks. Have no idea who Jen might be.

But...I HAVE heard of The People of Wal-Mart. LOL

That cake made me laugh :)

Hey, Garret, what about me? I'm hurt.

Mo, I did hug my vet...(Bob, you know which one...)

Poor Lisa. Sure, you can get some pots/pans too. Just be sure to keep up on the mortgage payments.

Well, now, I do still enjoy visiting Cake Wrecks. But I only get to glance at it briefly, and I hardly ever read the comments anymore; question of time. So I still find it funny.

I do think some of the novelty and shock value has worn off, making it harder to get a laugh from the same material. But I still find Jen's commentary pretty funny. And I still sometimes give a gasp of "Omigod, is that for REAL?"

On the other hand...I'm having similar thoughts about the novelty of my OWN blog! LOL!

Who is Rachel Ray?

I never knew about Cake Wrecks either until I happened to find it from your blog roll I think. I haven't been there in awhile but it was pretty funny the last time I checked it out. Wal-Mart people scare me....because ever since I saw that site I can no longer feel comfortable going to Wal-Mart in my purple sweatpants and fuzzy slippers at 3AM. Everyone has a camera phone these days...except for me.
